Vera Bradley Named 'Vendor of the Year'

Thursday, December 10, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
I read on Inside Indiana Business this morning that Vera Bradley was named by Gift Beat magazine as the Vendor of the Year.  The handbag designer was at #3 last year and moved up to #1 this year.

This is a great award for an Indiana company that Dr. Tavel has done business with for years.  While they are mostly recognized for their handbags, Vera Bradley also has a great line of eyeglasses.  Dr. Tavel carries the Vera Bradley frame line in all of its vision eye centers across Indiana, which includes Indianapolis, South Bend, Elkhart, Kokomo, Anderson, New Castle, Muncie, Richmond, Bloomington, Shelbyville, Columbus, Terre Haute, Fishers and Greenwood.

The Vera Bradley eyeglasses are much like their handbags in that they have intricate designs that are very unique and fun, not to mention comfortable.  It is no wonder they were named Vendor of the Year, with all that they have to offer.

Colts Pull Out a Big Win

Monday, November 16, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
What a game.  Colts/Pats.  Night game, national television and all the hype and hoopla.  When it comes to big games, you are always hoping for a great one but never know if it is going to happen or not.  Well, this one was great.  We were down for a big part of the game and it seemed like there was no way we were going to win.  A little bit of luck and a questionable decision led to the Indianapolis Colts pulling out a win at the last second thanks to a touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne.

The game was great, the atmosphere was fantastic and the show of support from local Indianapolis and Indiana residents was phenomenal.  I ran into several friends at the game and some old college friends from South Bend and Elkhart that I haven't seen in years.  The interesting part about the night was that more than one of my buddies brought up their health savings plans or flex spending accounts and were asking about getting in to use that before the end of the year.  We are at the biggest football game of the year and these guys want to talk about their health insurance plans!

It shows you how important it is to use health benefits before they expire.  The great part about these plans is that you can use them for many health related reasons, specifically eye care.  These plans can be used for eye examinations, contact lens fit examinations, purchasing frames and lenses and purchasing premium contact lenses.  One of my friends from Columbus, Indiana was planning on using more of his health savings for the baby they had this year.  When they didn't use as much as expected, he now has some funds that HE HAS TO USE.  The great part is that now he can come to Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care and get the prescription sunglasses that he has wanted for some time.

This is a great opportunity for anyone with a plan like this.  Go see your Indianapolis eye care doctor or come in to any of our Indiana Vision Centers before the end of the year and we will be sure to take care of you.

Not Kidding Around

Thursday, May 21, 2009 by Doni Tavel

There was a great article in 20/20 magazine called “Kids VS. The Computer Screen” not too long ago that really emphasizes the importance of children’s eye exams. As technology has begun to play an increasingly present role in our society, children are spending more and more time looking at computer screens and TV screens.

This poses a new threat to the ocular health of children. As children stare at the screens to check facebook, e-mail, play video games, etc. they tend to blink less causing dryer eyes and sometimes blurred vision. This can cause the crystalline lens of the eye to get “stuck” in the near position and make it difficult for distance viewing. As a result a child would need a little plus power in their eyeglasses. Detection of this issue requires a thorough eye examination by a vision doctor.

Dr. Tavel locations around Indiana take pride in their ability to provide extensive children’s eye exams as well as fashion frames (PEZ, Jalapeño, Major League Baseball, Kidco, and more!) for kids of all ages. Our locations have the best eye doctors and highly professional staff all across Indiana; from South Bend, to Indianapolis, right on down to Bloomington and Columbus.

Dr. Tavel and the Mini Marathon

Monday, May 4, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
I went down to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on Saturday morning to help cheer on the many runners.  What an event!  There were over 35,000 runners this year and it was an amazing day.  Great weather, great turnout, overall a great day.

This was my first time attending the event and I was thoroughly impressed.  One of the reasons I went was because of one of our patients.  When I was in our Columbus Doctor Tavel office a few months ago, I was talking to one of our patients who was going to come up to Indianapolis to run in the mini.  As we talked, she informed me that she had run it in the past, but she ran it with her glasses on.  I asked her if she had ever thought about wearing contact lenses and her response was something I hear all the time, "I tried wearing them years ago but didn't like them."  When I hear this, my goal is to educate patients on the simple fact that contact lenses have improved dramatically over the years.  The technology has changed and with the newer lenses, specifically silicone hydrogel lenses, the comfort level and wearability of contact lenses has increased substantially.

I recommended that she give it another try and our doctor fit her in the new Focus Dailies Aqua by CIBA Vision after giving her a thorough eye examination.  Focus Dailies Aqua are daily disposable contact lenses that are ideal for people who don't wear contacts that frequently and want a pair they can put in for a one-day time period.  The great part about these lenses is that they have a blink-activated moisturizing agent that makes wearing contacts much more comforting than when she tried them last.

I followed up with our patient after she ran in the mini and you would have thought Dr. Tavel actually helped her train.  She was so happy with the performance of the Focus Dailies product that she felt it made her that much more able to perform during the race because she wasn't focused on her sight and vision at all.  I was just happy I could be a part of the race without actually having to run in it!

Annual Eye Exams for Children

Monday, January 19, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart

Over the weekend, I took my 4 1/2 year old son into our Columbus, IN office for his annual eye examination.  This is his second exam and I have on my calendar an annual reminder that he needs to see one of our eye doctors.  This seems like a rather routine thing for me now, however prior to working for an optometry practice, I wouldn't have thought like this.  Growing up, my parents didn't take me to the eye doctor for annual exams.  An eye exam was thought of as something you needed when you were having trouble seeing and you needed glasses and lenses or contact lenses.

The problem is that most people don't realize that an eye exam should be thought of in a manner that is closer to a dentist than a regular doctor.  Many people go to their dentist for a 6 month or annual check up to make sure their teeth are in good condition, whereas most people go to a doctor only when they are sick.  The mindset needs to change from one of reactionary care to one of preventative care.  We as vision care providers need to do a better job educating patients on the values of an annual eye examination, which should start for children at the age of 3.  The truth is that a routine eye exam can uncover problems which frequently either have no detectable symptoms or come on so slowly that they are missed without a thorough exam by an eye care doctor.

The doctors at Dr. Tavel are specifically trained to detect signs of diabetes, High Blood Pressure, cataracts, and glaucoma in addition to writing corrective prescriptions for eye sight.  So while I don't think my son has a vision problem and he appears to see just fine, it is important for me and for him that I know for sure.
