Buy Eye Glasses and Eat Carrots For Best Vision

Thursday, September 2, 2010 by Katie Wickham

Dr. Tavel's Vision Blog would like to clear up a confusing eye health myth once and for all.
Eye Health Myth #2 from EyeCare America is something I again have been told growing up by my parents and this time grandparent’s too-eating carrots help your vision and eye sight.  This is TRUE!

My parents and grandparents were right with this myth as carrots do help maintain good sight.  Being rich in Vitamin A and beta-carotene, carrots help our eyes adjust to light from outside conditions to inside conditions as well as keep eye membranes moist for the best eye sight.  Vitamin A is commonly called retinol.

Don't eat carrots this way! Photo courtesy: http://www.csrplus.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/carrots.gifNot a carrot fan?  Nutritionists, Indianapolis optometrists, and eye care doctors across the state agree that there are plenty of other foods rich in both Vitamin A and beta-carotene to help your eye sight.  Other top sources of Vitamin A are egg yolk, cheddar cheese, and fortified milk.  Beta-carotene can be found in other fruits and vegetables with deep orange or yellow colors like cantaloupe, mangos, peaches, sweet potatoes, and apricots.  Pumpkins too have beta-carotene so as we enter into fall enjoy some pumpkin treats common this season to help your eyes.

Help dispel this myth and eat carrots!  Carrots may not completely be the answer though and you may need to buy eye glasses or contact lenses in Indianapolis or your home city to see clearly.  Carrots tend to be the best food though to help maintain good vision simply because they have both Vitamin A and beta-carotene.

Myth #2 is dispelled!

Choosing The Best Eye Doctor For You

Tuesday, August 17, 2010 by Katie Wickham

Blog by: Lauren Tavel

Your eyesight is vital. As one of the five senses we value, it is important to care for your eye health and prevent any vision loss. The first step in doing so is choosing an eye doctor that’s best suited for your needs. Whether it’s simply scheduling annual eye exams to check for diseases and infections, or getting glasses and lenses or premium contact lenses, you want an eye doctor that is qualified, has the right training and experience, and offers the services you need.  An eye care doctor should be knowledgeable, and show genuine care for his or her patients’ health.

Either your optometrist (OD) or ophthalmologist (DO or MD) should be certified through an accredited medical institution and should be licensed to practice through the state board of optometry or state medical board. Out of Dr. Tavel’s twenty-two eye care doctors, we have twenty one certified optometrists and one ophthalmologist that are licensed to practice. Our Columbus eye doctors are optometrists as well as our Bloomington, Indianapolis and Anderson eye doctors.  Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Regenstreif, works at our Kokomo location.

But which one is right for you; an optometrist or an ophthalmologist?  Both kinds of doctors can help you take care of your vision and protect your sight for the future.  Optometrists specialize in vision services such as eye examinations, treatment of conditions like amblyopia and strabismus, and diagnose conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and conjunctivitis. Optometrists can prescribe medications for specific eye conditions, prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses and can aid in diagnosing eye diseases and injury prevention services.  An ophthalmologist provides complete vision care including eye exams, medical and surgical eye care for instances such as glaucoma, iritis, chemical burns, cataracts, crossed eyes, tumors, trauma and more. They can diagnose and treat eye conditions related to diseases like diabetes, arthritis or brain conditions, offer eye disease preventative services and some offer plastic surgery.

So which eye care doctor is right for you? Come in to any of our Indiana vision centers and talk to our doctors for more information on eye health. At Dr. Tavel we aim to do much more than correct your vision; we also help you protect your vision. We go beyond the standard eye exam because we care about your health.  Choose one of our many qualified eye doctors today!

Can Cell Phones Give Eye Examinations?

Friday, August 6, 2010 by Kevin Gearheart
A group of researchers at MIT's Media Lab have come up with a method to perform refractions using cellphones.  The test is done by having patients look into a small lens, pressing a button until two lines overlap in a way that will tell the software application what that person's prescription is.

The key point here is that this is a great application for remote areas of the world where the inhabitants there do not have the luxury of standard eye examination equipment and eye care doctors and optometrists that can give routine eye examinations.  With blindness an increasing problem for various parts of the world due to the inability to correct refractive errors, this tool will be a wonderful benefit to millions of individuals.

What this tool will not be is a replacement to your annual eye examination from the best eye doctors around i.e. Dr. Tavel and his associates.  Eye exams are much more than determining your prescription and then providing you with eyeglasses or premium contact lenses.  They are important as our Indianapolis and Indiana optometrists provide a complete and thorough eye exam that includes testing for glaucoma, cataracts, muscle balance, visual acuity, depth perception and much more. At Dr. Tavel, we do much more than correct your vision; we also help you protect your vision. We go beyond the standard eye exam because we care about your health.

Quite the "Bad Romance," Going Gaga Over Circle Contacts

Thursday, July 15, 2010 by Katie Wickham

I want your love, and I want your revenge; You and me could write a bad romance.
Infamous song lyrics by pop-music artist Lady Gaga to the global chart topping hit song “Bad Romance;” a song that has helped make Lady Gaga one of the most popular artists today all over the world.

Tonight at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Gaga fans will get to see the American star perform in a show that according to the star’s website will still have the disco balls, hot pants, sequins, and stilettos, known favorites of Gaga, but with a more fine tuned approach and a fierce structure.

Hoosiers are bound to hear the hit, “Bad Romance” tonight, a song that has many young fans risking their eye sight to mimic the star’s music video cartoon eyes.  Gaga’s eyes in the Lady Gaga's wide cartoon eyes in the Bad Romance music video; Photo Courtesy of: scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/1599766.htmlsong’s music video appear to be large and circular, inspired from Japanese cartoons “Anime” and young girls everywhere are buying illegal contacts to make this fashion statement.

Called “Circle Contact Lenses,” these contacts cover a portion of the whites of the eye making the eye appear large and round like a cartoon’s.  According to an ABC News report, these lenses are not FDA approved which has many eye care doctors concerned about their popularity and usage, especially among young Gaga fans who are illegally buying the colored lenses online for $20 and changing them in and out like earrings.

Wearers of these illegal contacts run the risk of potentially losing their eye sight if worn for extended amounts of time or if fitted improperly which could scratch the cornea damaging vision. It is impossible to have these “Circle Contact Lenses” fitted properly as they are bought online and not prescribed through an optometrist.  Quite the risk for making a fashion statement, but one that many are making as they sing along Rah, rah ah, ah, ah; Roma, roma, ma; Gaga, ooh, la, la; Want your bad romance.

Schedule an Eye Exam on-line with Dr. Tavel

Monday, May 17, 2010 by Kevin Gearheart
While we have had the capability for quite some time, not all of Dr. Tavel's patients are aware that they can schedule their eye examination on-line at www.drtavel.com.  From our home page, there is a button that will take you to our exam scheduler.
Dr. Tavel Appointment Button

Why is this important to know?  This is quite simply the easiest way to schedule an exam with one of our Indiana eye doctors at a Dr. Tavel Vision Eye Center.  Of course, you can pick up the phone to schedule your exam, but this method allows you to schedule an eye examination at YOUR convenience, any time of the day.  If you are like me, you tend to get busy during the day and picking up the phone to call your Indianapolis Optometrist can get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.  I typically remember these things on my drive home from the office when I have a chance to slow down a bit.  Since Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care and Vision Values by Dr. Tavel have evening and weekend hours, I could still call to schedule an appointment, but I can also go to www.drtavel.com and schedule it in only a few minutes.  Not only can I do this when it fits my schedule, but it also saves me time when I actually go see the best eye doctors in Indiana because I know they have all the information needed and it is completely accurate so I can get in, see the eye doctor, order my eyeglasses and/or contact lenses and be on my way.

Eye Exam From the Patient's Point of View

Monday, March 22, 2010 by Kevin Gearheart
One of our best eye doctors in Indianapolis sent me the following YouTube clip last night.  It is a hilarious clip of a comedian talking about going in to get his eyes examined.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8GMFkc3iSA

After watching this, the reason I laughed so hard is because it is so true (as with most comedy, I suppose).  He mentions that it has been six years since his last eye examination and the reason he didn't go is that he was "too busy to see clearly".  How many of us have been guilty of putting off going to see our eye care doctor because we didn't have time?  While this clip is funny, the truth is that lost productivity due to poor eyesight alone costs this country millions of dollars every year because people put off going to their eye doctors to get a comprehensive eye examination and a renewed prescription for their contact lenses or eyeglasses.  On top of this, according to the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with major eye diseases is increasing, and vision loss is becoming a major public health problem.

Blindness or low vision affects 3.3 million Americans over the age of 40, or 1 in 28. This figure is projected to reach 5.5 million by the year 2020. The study identifies age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy as the most common eye diseases in Americans age 40 and over.

Worse yet, another study shows that most Americans don’t know the risks and warning signs of diseases that could cause blindness. In the "Survey of Public Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Related to Eye Health and Disease," sponsored by the National Eye Institute and the Lions Clubs International Foundation, 71 percent of respondents said that eye sight loss would have the greatest impact on their day-to-day lives, but only eight percent knew that there are few early warning signs of glaucoma.

The answer is pretty simple, get in to see your Indianapolis or Indiana eye doctor and follow the mantra of "check yearly, see clearly."

Customer Satisfaction Is Critical

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 by Kevin Gearheart
When I came into the office this morning, I had an interesting e-mail in my inbox.  One of our premium contact lens patients from our Greenwood office had gone to our website and submitted the following:

"I wanted to let you know what an AWESOME job your Greenwood store is doing! I went in there because of a promotion that you were having on a contact exam and some contacts. I had low expectations due to the fact that Dr. Tavel is a chain and I have had exams at these types of chains before. Boy, was I wrong! Dr. S is an asset to that office! He did a great exam and I never felt rushed. Priscilla and Angela in the front office were amazing. My husband needed an exam and so I signed him up immediately. Dear Priscilla helped us get the most for our money and helped us use the promotions to our benefit (we don't have eye insurance, so this was very important!) Angela did the same thing for me! I was astonished at the quality of care and price of glasses that we got at Dr. Tavel. I don't think the prices could have been beat anywhere. And let me tell you, I know the service is unmatched! Please commend the Greenwood store and keep up the good work - we will be back!"

What we recognize at Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care is that any eye doctor can perform an eye exam and that our patients can buy eye glasses and premium contact lenses from a large number of locations.  Where we have to differentiate ourselves is in offering the best customer services, from the best eye doctor and from the valued opticians offering guidance and information about which lenses are the best for each individuals eyes.  Ultimately, this is what leads to true customer satisfaction, which is critical to our success in Greenwood, Indianapolis and all throughout Indiana.

Pink Eye!

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart

Recently, one of my good friends came down with Pink Eye.  When most people think of Pink Eye, they think of young children at school, spreading this contagious disease to one another as they don't wash their hands often enough.  The reality is that adults can contract this as well and some of the most likely adult candidates are contact lens wearers.

Why are contact lens wearers more vulnerable to pink eye and what was likely the primary cause of my friend getting pink eye?  Poor hygiene in the handling of contact lenses and contact lens cases can contribute mightily to infections of this sort.  My friend has a very bad habit of not changing or cleaning her premium contact lenses for months at a time.

So, when she went to get an eye examination with one of our Indianapolis eye doctors, she was told to throw away her contacts, replace her contact lens case and wear her eyeglasses for a few days to help alleviate the symptoms.  The problem was that when she put her glasses on, they had a 3 year old prescription in them that was off substantially and her vision was impaired.  Since she wears contact lenses all the time, she saw very little need to have an updated pair of glasses.  Needless to say, she came back in to one of our Indianapolis locations and ordered a new pair of glasses.

Two morals to this story: (1) contact lens wearers need to follow the guidelines of their wear schedule so as to have the best eye health and (2) even those patients who wear contacts 24/7 have a need to have a back-up pair of glasses.

Take a Look at Daily Disposables

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
For years now, our country has been one that loves 2-week contact lenses.  While other countries overseas are embracing daily disposable contact lenses, it is still a lens modality that has struggled to catch on here with any real success.  For the life of me, I can't figure out why.  The only guess I have is that we aren't as educated about this type of contact lens.  With this, I urge you to take a look at Daily Disposables (CooperVisions's ProClear 1 day & ClearSight 1 day as well as Ciba Vision's Focus Dailies) as on option for premium contact lenses.

The reasons are two-fold: better eye health and better comfort.  The reasons it is better for eye health are simple:

-  Since you have to change your lens on a daily basis, this promotes good ocular health.  Daily Disposables have the highest compliance rate of any modality at 94%.
-  Daily Replacement means less deposit build up, reducing problems associated with this, such as GPC
-  Daily disposables have the lowest infection rate since you are putting in a new, fresh lens every day

The reasons for better comfort are obvious as well.  Putting in a new lens every day means you are getting a fresh lens with no deposit build-up, allowing for a more comfortable wearing experience.

If you haven't tried daily disposable contact lenses, please take some time when you see your Indianapolis Optometrist or Indiana Eye Doctor to discuss this modality and the benefits it can provide.

Colts Pull Out a Big Win

Monday, November 16, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
What a game.  Colts/Pats.  Night game, national television and all the hype and hoopla.  When it comes to big games, you are always hoping for a great one but never know if it is going to happen or not.  Well, this one was great.  We were down for a big part of the game and it seemed like there was no way we were going to win.  A little bit of luck and a questionable decision led to the Indianapolis Colts pulling out a win at the last second thanks to a touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne.

The game was great, the atmosphere was fantastic and the show of support from local Indianapolis and Indiana residents was phenomenal.  I ran into several friends at the game and some old college friends from South Bend and Elkhart that I haven't seen in years.  The interesting part about the night was that more than one of my buddies brought up their health savings plans or flex spending accounts and were asking about getting in to use that before the end of the year.  We are at the biggest football game of the year and these guys want to talk about their health insurance plans!

It shows you how important it is to use health benefits before they expire.  The great part about these plans is that you can use them for many health related reasons, specifically eye care.  These plans can be used for eye examinations, contact lens fit examinations, purchasing frames and lenses and purchasing premium contact lenses.  One of my friends from Columbus, Indiana was planning on using more of his health savings for the baby they had this year.  When they didn't use as much as expected, he now has some funds that HE HAS TO USE.  The great part is that now he can come to Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care and get the prescription sunglasses that he has wanted for some time.

This is a great opportunity for anyone with a plan like this.  Go see your Indianapolis eye care doctor or come in to any of our Indiana Vision Centers before the end of the year and we will be sure to take care of you.

UV Protection for Your Eyes

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
My 5 year old son had his final soccer game of the season last Saturday in Indianapolis.  It was a great game and actually went to a shoot out at the end to decide the game.  Okay, these are 5 and 6 year olds so there was no goalie and they basically had to kick the ball straight into the goal from 30 yards away, but nonetheless it was pretty exciting.  Our team lost, but as with any youth soccer game the focus was more about getting their medals and what the snack of the week was.

It was a great fall day in Indiana and I got some sun, which is rare for early November.  It got me thinking about how most people are unaware that extended exposure to the same harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that affect their skin can also harm their eyes.  While outside on Saturday, all of the children's eyes were exposed to the sun's rays.  Some of the parents on the sidelines had sunglasses on, while others were wearing hats, which are both helpful in blocking UV rays from reaching the eyes.  When I am outside, I typically wear contact lenses that block UV rays and I also wear polarized sunglasses, which are great for absorbing and blocking UV rays, while also reducing glare from the sun.

The next time you and your children are playing outside, stay focused on the health of your eyes by wearing sunglasses, brimmed hats or premium contact lenses with UV blocking.  If you don't have these items available, make sure you go to your Indianapolis Optometrist, Eye Doctor or a local vision eye center.

Dr. Tavel Launches New Contact Lens E-commerce Site

Thursday, August 27, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart
We recently modified and updated our website with a new version of our contact lens e-commerce site.  This is a great benefit to our existing patients who want to order premium contact lenses on-line.  When a Dr. Tavel contact lens patient comes in to see one of our Indianapolis Optometrists or an Optometrist at any of the other Dr. Tavel vision eye centers, you are going to not only get a comprehensive eye examination and a contact lens fit, but you will now be able to walk away with a user name and password to easily re-order your premium contact lenses through www.drtavel.com
Why is this important and how is it any different than ordering contact lenses through another on-line provider?  When you go to www.drtavel.com to order contact lenses on-line, you can be sure that the lenses you are ordering are for your exact prescription without the hassle of having to input the Rx from the side of their contact box.  Your unique login will pull up the information and exact prescription given to you by your Indianapolis Eye Doctor or your Indiana Eye Doctor.  It is as simple as logging in, plugging in how many boxes you would like and having them shipped directly to your home.
The biggest question is going to be how we compare to the other on-line providers on price.  At Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care, we offer some of the best prices on contact lenses anywhere.  We are incredibly price competitive so you can be sure to get the RIGHT contact lenses at the RIGHT price, every time with the convenience of having them shipped directly to your home.  So whether you wear Acuvue Oasys, Air Optix Aqua, Purevision or another premium contact lens, feel free to come to us for your Indiana eye care needs.

Thank the Stormy Heavens for My Glasses!

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 by Doni Tavel

This morning in Indianapolis it absolutely poured rain! I was on my way in to work and hit all sorts of obstacles because of the crazy thunderstorm that is going on right now. I drove through a 2 foot deep puddle, was rerouted due to a lightning induced fire, and hydroplaned several times. How anything could be on fire in all this rain, I have no idea. But it was.

As I drove up Kessler Blvd. I noticed myself squinting and slowing down to almost 15 miles per hour to make sure I was staying on the road. It occured to me that if I hadn't been wearing my glasses I probably would've been in the ditch.

This situation is certainly a scary one, but its a good note to remind you how important it is to have an eye examination. There are so many obstacles (both natural and man-made) that make it difficult for our eyes to function properly that can be eased with customized lenses.

Dr. Tavel and his associate Indianapolis optometrists  are consistently prescribing premium contact lenses and the highest quality eyeglasses Indianapolis has to offer. Be sure to schedule an appointment for you and your family at any of our convenient Indiana locations.

Understanding Eye Care Professionals

Monday, July 27, 2009 by Doni Tavel

In considering the elements of eye care, terms can get a little confusing. Fear not! Dr. Tavel is here to help.

The Ophthalmologist: This individual is a medical doctor who specializes vision care. What differentiants this individual from regular vision providers is that he or she may perform eye surgery.

The Optometrist: This is the professional who specializes in eye examinations. During this exam the doctor will test for diseases, visual acuity, and prescribe premium contact lenses or glasses. (Dr. Tavel and his associates are Indiana eye dcotors aka "optometrists")

The Optician: These are the men and women that fill the doctor's prescription, fit glasses and lenses, and train the patient to use contact lenses. (In all of our Indianapolis Optical locations (You can find Dr. Tavel opticians smiling and ready to help in all of our state-wide and Indianapolis optical locations.)

Picnic on the Prairie and Anti-Reflective Lenses

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 by Doni Tavel
If you're unfamiliar with it, I suggest checking out Conner Prairie's "Symphony on the Prairie" presented by Marsh and Clarian Health. I've gone several times this summer, but I must say; this past time was the most adventurous.

It started pouring rain in the middle of our lovely picnic so my 2 friends and I piled underneath our giant rainbow umbrella as the weather forced our citronella candle to retire for the evening.  (I took this photo prior to the monsoon... it was only sprinkling at this point.)

Anyway, as we watched the orchestra play songs of composers from countries around the world, I noticed my eyes becoming very strained and tired. The stage was well lit, but everything around it was so dark that I found it rather difficult to sit and focus on the stage.

This is not uncommon! People come in to have an eye examination and complain about experiencing this same problem when driving at night or performing other tasks in the late evening. Lucky for you, I work in Indianapolis eye care, so I have the solution to this problem. :)

The reason my eyes were becoming strained was a result of the "halo" of glare created by the stage. This is exactly what happens with street lamps on the highway, headlights from other cars, or even the computer screen at work.

The solution is to have an Anti-Reflective coating on your eyeglass lenses. This coating ensures relief from tired eyes, relief from dangerous night time reflections, and relief from any glare causing situation that compromises comfort. The Anti-Reflective (AR) coating will ensure the clearest vision possible.

Any vision doctor will likely prescribe an AR coating as a standard to prevent discomfort from every day glare. Next time you go to purchase glasses and lenses ask about the AR coating options!

Or feel free to contact Dr. Tavel with any questions about our available AR options. www.drtavel.com/contact_us/

Power of Positive Feedback

Thursday, June 11, 2009 by Kevin Gearheart

The other night, I went down to Conseco Fieldhouse to check out the WNBA Indiana Fever game and support the local team.  As a self-proclaimed basketball junkie, I love watching these women play and I truly enjoy seeing how passionate the fans in Indianapolis are about their basketball teams.

While at the game, I was talking to another fan and he informed me that he has been a patient of Dr. Tavel for over 20 years.  He informed me that he has been going to the Greenwood Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care for a long time to get his eyes examined and to buy eyeglasses.  My first question when I talk to a Dr. Tavel patient is always "How was the service?"  The reason is that I know patients can get glasses and lenses anywhere and with on-line options for contact lenses, they can go even more places for that.  If we aren't providing excellent customer service, we aren't doing our job and we are going to lose our patients to a competitor.

The good news is that he was very happy with the service provided.  As tends to happen, he accidentally sat on his glasses and needed them to be adjusted.  He explained what happened to one of our opticians and she quickly fixed the glasses so they fit right again.  He told me that it was done as a complimentary service at no charge.  It is always good to hear from Dr. Tavel's patients, especially when they see the vision values that our eye doctors and staff provide.

The key to this experience is that people talk and they are more than willing to tell others about their experience, whether it be positive or negative.  To have been in business as long as we have at Dr. Tavel, we know that our success as Indiana Eye Doctors lies in our ability to provide eye examinations and customer service that far exceeds our customers expectations.

Strawberries and Your Eye Sight

Thursday, June 11, 2009 by Doni Tavel

I have officially justified the fact that I devoured a huge serving of strawberry shortcake for lunch on Friday at the Indianapolis 43rd Annual Strawberry Festival. Research shows that fruits rich in Vitamin C (like strawberries) are essential to good nutrition which is directly related to the functionality of your eyesight as you age.

Wouldn't it be nice to come out of an eye examination with a prescription for strawberries? I think we should get this trend started with Indiana eye doctors and just pass it along. Forget glasses and lenses, forget premium contact lenses, you need to eat more strawberries! Sounds good to me.
